Foursquare Hosts Product Panel Event and Speed Networking for Tech@NYU Students

On Thursday, December 9, 25 Tech@NYU students from underrepresented backgrounds visited Foursquare headquarters to learn about working in Product at a technology company, landing your first job out of college, and what it’s like working at Foursquare. Attendees first heard from panelists working in various Product roles at Foursquare, followed by a speed networking event where students had the chance to ask thoughtful questions from panelists and other Foursquare employees.

“Students from underrepresented backgrounds often lack access to knowing what it takes to land their first job in the technology industry,” said Ninh Nguyen, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Manager. “By hosting these types of events, students get the chance to hear first-hand what employers look for in a candidate and how to navigate their first job out of college.”

Panelists included Amy Lu, Senior Product Manager; Nelson Bishop, Product Support Team Lead; and Umair Masood, Associate, Product Partnerships. Moderated by Ninh Nguyen, the discussion spanned across what panelists’ day-to-day looked like in their respective roles, how students can stand out in their internships and applications when they apply to their first jobs, how to navigate the working world as professionals of color and women, and the benefits of working at Foursquare.

Following the panel event, students were invited to Fat Denny’s, Foursquare’s cafeteria, for the speed networking portion of the evening. In addition to the panelists, other employees of Foursquare shared insights into the tech industry and answered questions during three rounds of speed networking. The evening rounded off with open networking and to-go dinners, catered by Karen’s Touch of Soul, a Black- and LGBTQ-owned New Jersey-based catering company.
